YULIN, China – A new dome theater located within the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum in China’s Shaanxi Province has earned much praise due to its bold innovation, unique style, and fully immersive contents that offers audiences an extraordinary experience.
Powered by 22 Christie DWU850-GS 1DLP® laser projectors capable of WUXGA resolution and brightness levels of 8,400 ISO lumens, the projectors are installed and commissioned by Christie’s longstanding Chinese partner Wincomn Technology, which is also responsible for the venue’s projection design. With a diameter of 14 meters, the 360-degree dome theater enables audiences to experience the charm of northern Shaanxi folk culture in a highly immersive fashion. It perfectly complements the museum’s focus on northern Shaanxi folk music by reflecting on its long and stirring historical changes, and embodying a historical and humanistic spirit.
“Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum is China’s only museum featuring northern Shaanxi culture, and we are proud to be involved in this monumental project of delivering the projections in this new done theater,” said Tony Chen, general manager, Wincomn Technology. “The Christie GS Series laser projector, with higher levels of brightness, image quality, color reproduction and compact form factor, is the customer’s preferred choice.”
To create a deeper immersive feel beyond conventional dome theaters, the dome theater’s front, left and right sections have been expanded. Likewise, the dome’s height has also been increased, resulting in a larger projection area. Since this dome theatre is not fully spherical and ample walkway space is needed between the rows of seats and on the floor, there were tremendous challenges in executing the projection design.
The Christie DWU850-GS excels in displaying brilliant color, premium image quality and high-brightness
“The customer has requested for a high pixel count of the entire dome to increase a sense of presence. Furthermore, the visuals cannot appear distorted or warped even though the projection area is large and the curvature of the entire screen is inconsistent. Similarly, there are also stringent requirements for the projectors’ brightness, color imaging, and visual presentation,” Chen said.
Through continuous simulation and analysis, Wincomn’s engineers are able to overcome the challenges and complete the dome and floor projections seamlessly by taking into consideration the audience’s perspective, edge blending, and image consistency. Chen added, “Thanks to Christie’s proprietary BoldColor Technology, the 850-GS projectors provided high brightness, optimal image quality and precise color reproduction of the contents. Ultimately, the projectors succeeded in providing a realistic and stunning viewing experience for the audience.”
Throughout the entire process, Wincomn’s proficient projection design has helped avert a number of construction risks for the dome theater. The museum’s management is very satisfied with the projection design of the dome theater, and intends to fully utilize the huge screen space to provide an immersive experience to visitors. The unprecedented viewing experience adds to the museum’s technological elements and establishes novel cultural experiences, making the dissemination and inheritance of northern Shaanxi culture more interesting and lively.
Ernest Bakenie, Director of Sales for Asia Pacific, Entertainment, Christie, said, “The strategic deployment of 22 Christie DWU850-GS laser projectors by our partner Wincomn Technology at the new dome theater at Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum has enabled both locals and tourists to better appreciate northern Shaanxi culture and folk songs through lifelike and engaging visuals.
