KITCHENER, Ontario – A Christie® CP4220 Digital Cinema projector and Dolby-certified Christie Vive Audio™ sound system with 41 surround sound speakers pumping out 70,000 watts of power is installed at Post Production at Canadore in North Bay, Ontario.
Located a three-hour drive north of Toronto near the picturesque shores of Lake Nipissing, Canadore College is home to over 75 full-time programs and to students from Canada and around the world. The college injects nearly $244 million into the regional economy and is a popular locale for movie shoots with 11 film and television productions in 2017. Thanks to the new post production facility, 2018 is shaping up to be even busier resulting in an even more vibrant economy and even stronger employment numbers.
The 5,588 square foot Dolby Atmos® Certified Mix Theatre provides complete editing, sound mixing and finishing facilities, keeping the entire project local. It also includes a colour correction suite, ADR stage, specialized hardware and software, close captioning, and more. Complete Post Production facility opens to serve northern filming hub
"The television and film industry is booming in northern Ontario with several movies being shot, but because there wasn't a postproduction facility up here until now, companies left the north to post in southern Ontario, and rightfully so because there was nothing here to accommodate it," said Yura Monestime, project lead and Associate Dean of Media, Canadore College. "We noticed that gap about four years ago and met with the folks at Dynamix and Urban Post Production. We structured a business case for a postproduction facility and decided to set the bar high on an international level. The film economy here is already on fire and we're trying to capitalize on that and create a second economy from it."
Tom Bjelic and his team from Urban Post Production, an Emmy Award winning facility in Toronto, visited the Christie factory in Kitchener and were immediately impressed.
"We had a great experience in Kitchener and met the team who developed the Vive system and we were really impressed with what we saw and heard. We then went to a Toronto theater where Vive is installed and we thought it sounded fantastic," said Tom Bjelic, Owner, Urban Post Production and Canadore College professor. "The articulation, low end, separation and detail of all the audio was fantastic and we knew it would be a good fit for our project in North Bay."
Yet when it came time for the actual design by Dynamix and construction of the North Bay facility, meeting the stringent demands from Dolby was foremost on their minds.
"Meeting the Dolby standard makes it challenging for all aspects of the construction both technically and right down to the bricks and mortar," Bjelic continued. "The hope was that this room would be a pinnacle and exceed the threshold Dolby sets. And it really has. When we had the Dolby folks come up, even they were quite impressed by the facility."
The facility is for both the seasoned professional and students who rub shoulders with and learn from the best in the post production business. Monestime said that is where the magic happens with the student – the elevation of their skill set thanks to the symbiotic relationship between student and producer, director, mixer, or designer. The results have been remarkable; impressing even industry veterans.
"When you have state-of-the-art facilities, you start seeing incredibly professional results coming out of the student work and that bodes well for all the film, and film-related programs at the college," added Bjelic.
The sweet sound of Christie Vive Audio and commendation for Christie – the best in the industry
Monestime called the project very delicate and deep work, adding that both contractor, Venasse Construction and architect, Evans-Bertrand-Hill-Wheeler Architecture Inc.,
"Knocked it out of the park." He was also impressed by the professionalism of everyone involved, including the quality of Christie technology and the Christie team.
"We talked about other brands but in talking to Urban Post, Dynamix, and other people and asking them what's in their facility, it was always a Christie and we often heard 'You have to get a Christie.' The whole experience of working with Christie was great for us. And we are so happy we went with Christie Vive for the audio because it sounds so sweet."
His praise for Christie was echoed by Don Kinzinger, Digital Workflow and Systems Designer, Dynamix. "We designed it, spec'd it and Christie delivered. We used Christie to set up and color calibrate the projector in order to get a perfect picture to match the audio. The Christie support was very good right from the get go. Christie was the only product considered; being a Canadian manufacturer with local support was definitely a factor but as far as performance on a projector, Christie is the best in the industry."
