MADRID, Spain—Matadero Madrid’s Cineteca, a centerpiece of the city’s cultural landscape, has taken a technological leap forward with the installation of a Christie® CP4415-RGB pure laser projector in its main auditorium, Sala Azcona. This upgrade ensures Cineteca continues to deliver a high-quality cinematic experience, reinforcing its status as a leading venue for alternative and non-fiction cinema in Spain.
Matadero Madrid, operated by the Madrid City Council, occupies the city’s former municipal slaughterhouse in the Legazpi neighborhood. The 48-building complex was transformed into a versatile cultural hub, with spaces dedicated to contemporary art, exhibitions, theatre, festivals, live music, cinema, audiovisual projects, talks, workshops, artist residencies, educational programs, and family activities.
The Cineteca, inaugurated in 2011 in the area previously housing the slaughterhouse’s refrigeration units and boiler, is one of Matadero Madrid’s standout spaces. Specializing in alternative and non-fiction cinema, it boasts three auditoriums: Azcona, Plató, and Borau.
Sala Azcona, named in honor of renowned screenwriter Rafael Azcona, is the most striking of the three. Its unique design, featuring woven irrigation hoses that double as lighting for the walls and ceiling, creates a futuristic atmosphere, earning it recognition as one of Europe’s most original screening venues. The auditorium seats 236 and features a screen measuring 8.70 by 3.70 meters (28 feet wide by 12 feet high)
Previously outfitted with a Christie CP2000 Series 1 lamp projector, the venue now benefits from 4K technology and RGB pure laser illumination. “This new installation enhances the visual quality of our screenings while offering a more efficient solution,” explains Víctor Díaz, Operational Management Technician at Matadero Madrid
The upgrade was facilitated through a public tender, awarded to Ingevideo, a Christie partner. “The Christie CP4415-RGB was the perfect choice for Sala Azcona. It delivers high-fidelity visuals with operational efficiency that ensures a low total cost of ownership,” says Miguel Ángel Piqueras, General Manager of Ingevideo.
The CP4415-RGB is 18% more efficient than its competitors, producing 11.9 lumens per watt. Its reduced energy consumption lowers the total cost of ownership by 38%. This compact, all-in-one projector, compatible with DCI standards, features Christie CineLife+™ electronics and Real|Laser™ illumination technology.
“The CP4415-RGB enables Cineteca to dazzle audiences with stunningly colorful, detailed, and realistic images,” Piqueras adds. “Its wide color spectrum, covering over 95% of the Rec. 2020 color space, results in richer, more vibrant visuals that significantly enhance the viewing experience.&rdquo
Díaz also highlights the operational benefits of the new projector: “Our previous projector required frequent maintenance and lamp replacements. With the Christie CP4415-RGB, maintenance is now minimal—limited to occasional filter changes—improving efficiency and significantly reducing costs and downtime.”
He concludes: “We are thrilled with the new projector, which represents the latest in cinema projection technology. The experience has been overwhelmingly positive, with Christie and Ingevideo providing exceptional support to ensure a seamless installation and transition.”
