Discover how Knownsense Studios achieves stunning projection mapping and immersive content creation

Elevating spectacular large-scale projection mapping experiences

In the ever-evolving landscape of content creation, Knownsense Studios stands out as an innovator in immersive storytelling. Founded in 2011, the Ahmedabad-based studio has transformed from a small team of two into a dynamic group of over 50 professionals, seamlessly integrating technology, design, and narrative. Their remarkable journey has led to the successful completion of more than 500 projects across India, making them a key player in the realm of large-scale architectural projection mapping.

“From the very start, our goal was to push the boundaries of what’s possible in content creation,” says Mandeep Sharma, Head of Production and Animation at Knownsense Studios. “Technology plays a key role, but storytelling is what drives everything we do. Each project is about creating an experience that leaves a lasting impression.”

The name “Knownsense” itself makes one pause, as it playfully resembles “nonsense.” But this clever wordplay carries deeper meaning. The name encapsulates the studio’s mission to take what’s known and make sense of it, transforming familiar ideas into something fresh and impactful.

“It’s about turning knowledge into something that clicks—a creative process that sticks with people,” Mandeep explains. The quirky name also pays homage to Indian cinema icon Rajinikanth, whose iconic line “What nonsense!” inspired the studio’s unique moniker. Like their projects, the name blends wit, creativity, and a deep understanding of storytelling.

The evolution of Knownsense Studios

From ancient structures over 1,100 years old to modern architecture, Knownsense Studios has demonstrated how projection mapping can transform any surface into a canvas for storytelling. The studio’s multi-disciplinary approach incorporates elements like 3D animation, immersive environments, and holograms to create dynamic experiences that engage audiences across different platforms.

“From the very start, our goal was to push the boundaries of what’s possible in content creation. Technology plays a key role, but storytelling is what drives everything we do.” - Mandeep Sharma, Knownsense Studios

“Our work in the early years taught us that projection mapping wasn’t just for large venues,” Mandeep explains. “We realized its potential in smaller spaces, like museums and experience centers, and began exploring how we could use it to craft intimate, yet powerful stories in these environments.”

This insight paved the way for some of the studio’s most distinctive installations, ranging from large-scale nighttime spectacles such as the Matrubhumi show at the Red Fort and Modhera Sun Temple, to fully immersive 360-degree projection mapping, where every surface in a room, from the ceiling to the floor, became part of the visual experience.

Defining projects that left a lasting impact

One of the studio’s most iconic projects was the visual storytelling for the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the tallest statue in the world. Knownsense Studios faced the challenge of projecting visuals onto an intricate and uniquely shaped surface. Using Christie 3DLP projectors, the team overcame these obstacles to produce a show that has been running continuously for six years.

“Projection mapping on the Statue of Unity was unlike anything we had ever done,” Mandeep recalls. “We had to consider every angle and texture. The Christie Crimson Series projectors, with their outstanding color reproduction and omnidirectional capabilities, gave us the flexibility to deliver vibrant visuals and the precision needed for such a monumental structure.”

Another highlight was the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, where the team created three different shows using the same structure but with unique narratives and visual techniques. Each show was distinct, offering visitors a fresh experience throughout the year.

“We pride ourselves on our ability to adapt, and the display technologies at our disposal enable us to push those creative boundaries,” says Mandeep. “Our approach to storytelling is always evolving, and each project provides an opportunity to innovate.”

Empowered by Christie projectors

A significant part of Knownsense Studios’ success comes from their collaboration with Christie. The studio first came across Christie’s Roadster Series projectors in 2013 and was immediately impressed by their performance and durability in demanding event environments. Since then, Christie has become the preferred choice for various projects.

“Christie projectors have been game-changers for us,” says Mandeep. “Their color accuracy and brightness bring our stories to life, no matter the surface or complexity. The transition from lamp to laser illumination in their 1DLP and 3DLP projectors has allowed us to take on even more intricate projection mapping challenges. And their support is exceptional—we can always rely on them, whether it’s troubleshooting or after-hours assistance.”

Inspire Series is a family of full-featured 1DLP laser projectors designed for small-to-mid size environments.

One particularly challenging project involved a full-room projection mapping for the Kapurthala Science City. Using 14 Christie Inspire Series DWU960-iS laser projectors, the studio created an immersive environment that covered the ceiling, walls, and floor, adding multi-sensory elements like scent and temperature to enhance the experience.

“We had to think beyond just the visual impact,” Mandeep adds. “Christie’s technology allowed us to map complex environments and synchronize all the sensory elements for a truly immersive experience.”

Blending art and technology for seamless storytelling

The creative process at Knownsense Studios is a seamless blend of art, technical expertise, and innovative design. The team begins with thorough research and conceptualization to align their narratives with the client’s vision. A structured workflow includes scriptwriting, storyboarding, and high-resolution content creation, followed by detailed site analysis and technical planning for projection mapping.

“We work in parallel from the very beginning,” Mandeep explains. “As soon as we have a script draft, our ideation team starts thinking about how to visually depict specific scenes. This parallel process allows us to ensure every element aligns, so the final result is coherent and impactful.”

By following this structured process, Knownsense Studios has been able to transform static surfaces into living, breathing storytellers. Whether working on a towering statue or a small museum display, the studio pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in content creation, ensuring that each story resonates deeply with its audience.

Elevating content creators in the spotlight

While the spotlight often falls on the impressive hardware and equipment behind these projects, Knownsense Studios believes in elevating the role of content creators. The team emphasizes that without a compelling story and carefully crafted visuals, even the most advanced technology can’t deliver meaningful experiences.

“We always make sure that content and technology work hand in hand,” says Mandeep. “We place a strong emphasis on the narrative because it’s the story that connects emotionally with the audience. By giving equal importance to content and technology, we can create truly captivating and impactful experiences that resonate deeply.”

Looking to the future

As technology continues to advance, Mandeep notes that team Knownsense is excited to explore new storytelling avenues using AI-powered new media. Their upcoming projects include museum installations that integrate traditional art forms with modern digital techniques, creating emotionally engaging experiences that are both culturally rich and technically advanced.

“We’re always looking to the future. Whether it’s AR, VR, or AI-powered content, we believe that these emerging technologies will continue to revolutionize how stories are told. And as always, our goal is to make sure that the content and the technology serve the story,” says Mandeep.

In an industry that is constantly evolving, Knownsense Studios remains committed to pushing the boundaries of content creation, crafting experiences that blend innovative technologies with captivating narratives. And with Christie as a trusted partner, the studio is poised to continue setting new standards for immersive storytelling, ensuring that each project leaves an indelible mark on its audience.

As Mandeep aptly puts it, “At the end of the day, it’s all about telling stories that matter—and doing it in a way that people will remember long after the lights go out.”
